On the Come Up by Angie Thomas7/8/2023 ![]() ![]() It’s the one thing she feels like she’s good at. This is Brianna Jackson’s story, and Bri wants nothing more than to be a rapper, like her father Lawless before her. But I think it’s a little more personal, too. The book takes its time getting to this point, which you might think is the catalyst for the events of On the Come Up. Like in THUG, Thomas uses a ripped-from-the-headlines hook to write her characters around in this case, the harassment and racism of school security guards escalates to violence when two of them throw a teenager to the floor and pin her there after she refuses to relinquish her backpack (which passed through the metal detector without incident, but does contain contraband candy). ![]() ![]() This one takes place in the same universe as THUG, and makes some reference to the events that occurred in that story. On the Come Up is the second book by the author of The Hate U Give (which I also loved, if that wasn’t clear from the first sentence of this review). Alright, Angie Thomas, you got me I’ll read anything you write. ![]()

The cruel prince series in order7/8/2023 ![]() ![]() The romance was a huge draw for me, and for the most part, it certainly didn’t disappoint! I easily got into the chemistry that oozed between the two main characters, Emilia and Wrath, and loved their whole dynamic I never get tired of an enemies-to-lovers dynamic. ![]() What I’m noticing with this newer series, however, is that the author seems to have more room for fun and creativity to take her story even further! This is actually my first novel by Kerri Maniscalco, and after reading it I can say I’m definitely more and more interested in reading her other series I mentioned above because there are still some familiar themes of murder, mystery, romance, and historical settings to make the reader engaged and wanting to stay up late to see what happens next. ![]() Kingdom of the Wicked was a slow burn of a book for me the beginning started off like any other YA Fantasy title, but once you get further into the story and discover more and more myth and lore in the world that the author of the Stalking Jack The Ripper series has created, I can really say that the book takes off with a jolt in some witchy delight! Are you always this dramatic?'” – Kerri Maniscalco, “Kingdom of the Wicked” ‘It’s a game of scopa, not a battle between life and death. Or the choice will be made for you, witch. Genre(s): YA Fantasy, New Adult Romance, YA Romance, Paranormal Romance Total Star Rating: 3.75 Pages ![]()

Duino elegies7/8/2023 ![]() The poems employ a rich symbolism of angels and salvation but not in keeping with typical Christian interpretations. ![]() The Duino Elegies are intensely religious, mystical poems that weigh beauty and existential suffering. After their publication in 1923 and Rilke’s death in 1926, the Duino Elegies were quickly recognized by critics and scholars as his most important work. With a sudden, renewed inspiration-writing in a frantic pace he described as a “boundless storm, a hurricane of the spirit” he completed the collection in February 1922 while staying at Château de Muzot in Veyras, in Switzerland’s Rhone Valley. Aside from brief episodes of writing in 19, Rilke did not return to the work until a few years after the war ended. During this ten-year period, the elegies languished incomplete for long stretches of time as Rilke suffered frequently from severe depression-some of which was caused by the events of World War I and being conscripted into military service. ![]() The poems, 859 lines long in total, were dedicated to the Princess upon their publication in 1923. ![]() ![]() The Duino Elegies (German: Duineser Elegien) are a collection of ten elegies written by Rilke in 1912 while a guest of Princess Marie von Thurn und Taxis (1855–1934) at Duino Castle, near Trieste on the Adriatic Sea. ![]()

Jaymin eve curse of the gods7/7/2023 ![]() ![]() Now, look – I’m not opposed to that type of thing, in the general sense. They are almost gods themselves, and under their service, she is either going to end up sentenced to death, or else they are going to ruin her so badly that she will wish for it. Under the sudden, watchful eye of the gods, she will be tasked to serve the Abcurse brothers, five sols built of arrogance, perfection, and power. ![]() Her life will be one of servitude to the sols, the magic-blessed beings who could one day be chosen to become gods.Īt least her outer village is far removed from the cities of the sols, and she won’t ever be forced to present herself to them … Until one small mistake changes everything, and Willa is awarded a position to serve at Blesswood, the top sol academy in the world – a position that she definitely did not earn. In fact, dirt might actually be more useful than Willa. In Minatsol, being a dweller means that you are literally no better than dirt. Here’s the summary, and you can practically taste the YA of it all: ![]() They all go to a Hogwarts-esque academy where the middle ranking of people can aspire to become gods, which apparently rule the land, though I’m not sure how, since they live somewhere else. The summary described the premise: a very Hunger Gamesian-style dystopia, with people split into castes, one of which is practically slavedom. I purchased it through Audible on a Daily Deal, and it sounded … well, weird. ![]()

![]() ![]() ![]() This was quite different to the HR's I normally read mainly because the heroine has experienced something quite life changing, the peerage might even say she's been compromised.disgraced even. I don't know what it is about these, broody, tortured and difficult heroes that I love so much, but there you are, I absolutely loved this book! I guess I could call this a second chance romance since the two main characters had met years before and missed their chance but 15 years later as if fate had intervened they meet again. I would have taken you right here, in a public building, with patrons and staff and bloody school children walking through. Instead, he put his mouth to her ear and growled, “And I merely put my hand up your skirt. She thought he would kiss her again, and she turned up her face. “His eyes, already hot-blue with passion, dropped, heavy lidded. ![]()
